Gluten Free Review of Outback Steakhouse

I remember when Outback first came to our corner of Ohio suburbia in the 90s and it was an instant hit.  We lived in an area where people always complained there were no good restaurants, and good restaurants that did show up had a hard time gaining support. But people loved Outback and still do! Even better, gluten free people can love it too.

How Outback Handles Gluten Free

Of course, Outback isn’t a gluten free environment, so dining there does involve risk for a strictly gluten free diet. However, Outback’s website states that:

“Outback provides gluten-free education to all of its employees and has a protocol for each time a gluten-free menu item is ordered. This includes: hand washing, glove changing, using clean cooking equipment and utensils, and special ordering instructions for our chefs.”

Outback also states that they have ties with the Gluten Intolerance Group, and that their gluten experts help guide them in the right direction and keep them on top of gluten related topics, consumer needs, and scientific research.

This sounds like a lot more effort than a lot of restaurants put in. But still, always, ALWAYS make your Server aware of your celiac/gluten intolerance/allergy, and request that they take all precautions possible as gluten can have extreme consequences on your health.

I eat Outback frequently without issue, but there is always risk, so make sure your needs are known.

There’s A lot More Than A lot of Steak on the Menu…

With that being said, there’s A LOT of gluten free food to like here. Even if you aren’t the biggest steak eater—I’m not!

There’s the classic remoulade sauce for the grilled salmon (omg), the deliciously seasoned grilled shrimp, and some of my favorite honey mustard to go with satisfying salads.

If there’s a theme here I think it’s that Outback does a really good job with it’s flavors.  You are eating from their gluten free menu, but it makes you feel like you aren’t really missing out on all the flavor of the full menu. All of their seasonings are GF too, so that makes things easier for sure.

I recently said this in my Bonefish post, but Outback can also be a good option if you are traveling and haven’t had time to look up local spots to get a safe GF meal.

Did I mention dessert?! Read on and find out more. Let’s dig in!

Gluten Free Outback Appetizer

Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie

I think these shrimp are such a delight. I’m a big fan of the lightly spicy semi-blackened kind of seasoning they use on these. Just don’t forget to order without the Garlic Toast!

Grilled Shrimp also come with the Classic Remoulade—which is one of my favorite sauces around.

Gluten Free Outback Salads

Entree salads aren’t on my go-to choice but I usually do get a side salad (w/o the croutons). VERY IMPORTANT- remember to order your salad WITHOUT CROUTONS.

Aussie Cobb Salad

Mixed greens, tomatoes, bacon, Monterrey Jack, Cheddar, chopped hard-boiled eggs, grilled chicken, and choice of gluten-free dressing.

Brisbane Caesar Salad

Crisp romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing with choice of grilled chicken or shrimp.

Gluten free salad dressings include blue cheese vinaigrette, ranch, Caesar, honey mustard, tangy tomato, creamy blue cheese, light balsamic vinaigrette, mustard vinaigrette, and raspberry vinaigrette. I’m a big fan of the honey mustard. I’m also now intrigued by the mustard vinaigrette that I’m now noticing for the first time as I write this. Yay, for discovering new things!

Here Are A Few of My Favorite Things – Entrees

All entrees come with a choice of two sides. Gluten free sides are listed below under entrees.

Perfectly Grilled Salmon

I do really enjoy this salmon. It’s just so yummy with the seasoning and remoulade sauce.

Outback Ribs

Yummmmm, Outback Ribs are like a guilty pleasure. They are so good. The tangy BBQ sauce is just right.

Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie

These are the same Grilled Shrimp that are listed as an appetizer, but the entree includes more of them! The Grilled Shrimp are also delicious with their special blend of herbs and spices with the classic remoulade sauce.

Other Notable Entrees

Steak Eight Different Ways Plus Add-Ons and Options of 6 Different Steak ‘N Mate Combos

Outback has the following steak options which come with a Steakhouse Potato and one side: Victoria’s Barrel-cut Filet Mignon, Outback Center-Cut Sirloin, Ribeye, Classic Prime Rib (served without an jus), Outback Style Prime Rib (served without an jus), Melbourne Porterhouse, Bone-In Ribeye, and Bone-In New York Strip.

You can also add toppings such as grilled onions, roasted garlic butter, grilled shrimp, and steamed lobster tail.

Alice Springs Chicken

This is another fun and flavorful entree. It’s grilled chicken piled with sautéed mushrooms, crisp bacon, Monterey Jack, Cheddar, and honey mustard sauce. I like this one, but it’s almost too rich to be one of my very favorites. There’s a lot going on.

A Nice Assortment of Gluten Free Sides

Outback has a nice assortment of gluten free sides to choose from. My favorites are the Baked Potato with all the fixins’ and a House Salad (w/o croutons) with honey mustard dressing. Here’s a list of all Outback’s gluten free sides:

  • Homestyle Mashed Potatoes
  • Baked Potato
  • Sweet Potato
  • Fresh Seasonal Vegetable
  • Fresh Mixed Vegetables
  • Asparagus
  • Tasmanian Chili
  • House Salad (without croutons)
  • Caesar Salad (without croutons)

GLUTEN FREE DESSERT!

What’s cool about the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under is that you don’t even have to order the gluten free Chocolate Thunder, they all are! Boom, pretty cool!

I wouldn’t say this is my favorite gluten free dessert from a chain restaurant—I love Bone Fish’s Flourless Chocolate Cake too much—but it’s so fun to have the option of dessert and of course, it is delicious. I love to feel included at every stage of the meal.

Chocolate Thunder from Down Under

This booming dessert includes an “extra-generous” GLUTEN FREE pecan brownie, vanilla ice cream, warm chocolate sauce, chocolate shavings, and whipped cream.
